The Lady of the Lake is a figure in Arthurian legend who plays a pivotal role in the story of King Arthur. She is said to have given Arthur his sword Excalibur, and later to have taken it back from him. In some versions of the legend, she also raises Lancelot after he was abandoned as an infant. The Lady of the Lake is often depicted as a mysterious and powerful figure, living in an enchanted lake or other body of water. She may be seen as either benevolent or malevolent depending on her actions towards characters such as Merlin and Arthur.
