Áine is the Celtic Goddess of Summer, wealth, and sovereignty. The feast of Midsummer Night was held in her honor. She represents the sun, love, and fertility, with the power to ensure plentiful crops and harvests. Áine once bit off the ear of King Ailill Aulom, she did this to protect herself when the King forced himself onto her, a King must be "unblemished" to rule according to ancient Ireland beliefs; a disfigured Aulom is rendered unfit to be King. In other versions of her myth, Áine is remembered as the Queen of the fairy.
